Structures

Cable Picture

The Structures section contains a glossary of terms, information on basic structural concepts and systems, and an interactive quiz for the users’ self- evaluation. The Basic Concepts section contains information on statics, structural loads, structural materials, mechanics of materials, connections, foundations, lateral subsystems, and structure and form. The Structural Systems section contains information on trusses, beams, columns, frames, cables, arches, and surface spanning structures. Consistent with the Interactive Structures DVD, the information contained on the website utilizes digital graphic technology, 3-D computer generated models and animations to communicate the principles and application of structural analysis and building technology. In addition, each of the structural systems contains a series of tables that provide general guidelines for span lengths, load capacities, size, spacing, and depth ratios including various interactive animations that visually demonstrate the structural behavior of the system. The purpose of the tables is to provide architecture students a general range of dimensions for structural elements that can be applied in the design-studio setting.
